If you only have one device to worry about, ProtonVPN is a great option. This free service offers what the company calls “medium speed,” which means you can’t access the 10 Gb/s servers used by paying customers. Opera is a VPN browser that offers a built-in ad blocker. To test this, I visited an ad-heavy news site (Huffpost) and it blocked all ads on the page, including those annoying video ads. In addition, it has a tracker blocker that prevents your online activity from being captured in the browser. This means you can have private browsing sessions on your Android device without ads.
It has unlimited data, but it doesn’t lend itself to bypassing geo-restrictions. I couldn’t test it on Netflix because the VPN browser doesn’t protect your traffic outside of Opera, and Netflix kept prompting me to download its Android app. Hulu and Amazon Prime Video immediately detected that I was using a VPN, but I was able to access several blocked sites, such as TikTok and Funimation.
You can use this VPN to stream HD local content because it has good speed. In my tests, I recorded an average download rate of 15 Mbps. It’s much slower than other free VPNs like hide.me or Speedify, but it’s still good enough for HD streaming. I watched an HD documentary on YouTube and had no problems throughout the playback.
Although it lacks some important security features, such as an auto-terminate switch, your browser traffic is protected by AES 256-bit military-grade encryption. This prevents hackers, governments and ISPs from reading your data. In addition, it has a strict no-logging policy, so your private information will never be stored.
The biggest problem is that Opera only protects browser traffic. This means that anything you do outside of Opera is not protected. For example, if you use an external client for seed downloads, your activity will be visible to your ISP. Your banking application is also not secure.
